Matthew Rhys Opens Up: Fatherhood Transforms His Emotions and Brings Tears of Joy

Rhys, who additionally has two step-kids with Russell — River, 17, and Willa Lou, 12 — remarked that there was another resemblance between him and his role in that they both had offspring who are capable of driving.
“[River] has successfully completed his [driving] examination in New York, God bless him,” he quipped. “I believe if he can navigate there, he can handle anywhere.”
The performer previously discussed managing the balance between work and parenting their son in an interview with PEOPLE in June 2024. He mentioned at that time that they ensure there is always “a parent present in the home” to assist with his care.
“What we attempt to do is – as many of our acquaintances do – one works while the other doesn’t,” Rhys explained about their family dynamic. He acknowledged, however, that “there are instances where you’re ships passing in the night to some extent, and that complicates things a bit.”
“But we aim not to disturb home life excessively. So that’s how we’ve generally managed it. And for the most part, up until now, it appears effective,” he detailed, jesting that he’ll now “knock on wood.”
Despite how the “logistical aspect of childcare turns challenging” if Rhys and Russell work as a team, he mentioned they remain very much keen on another collaborative project. The duo famously commenced their romance while performing together on The Americans.
“We indeed would collaborate [again], we’ve previously stated that,” Rhys affirmed. “We’ve just been waiting. We always noted that The Americans was so unique, it would have to be something similar that we’re both incredibly eager to undertake. It ought not to be just anything.”
