Why should we not use lipstick instead of blush and eye shadow?

lipstick instead of blush: All makeup enthusiasts would agree that we like it when our cosmetic products can do more than one thing at a time. And, we are all guilty of using our lipstick as blush or eyeshadow.

While we agree that the result is always great and this pocket-friendly hack is also very popular on Instagram, the reality is that you shouldn’t use something that is made for your lips on other parts of your face.

Don’t follow the trend blindly

lipstick instead of blush: Dr Castelino says that since lip products are more pigmented and contain fragrances, it would not be advised to apply them over the eyelids.

lipstick instead of blush: “The eyelids consist of the thinnest skin in the body and hence, are the most sensitive. Further, ingredients in lipsticks such as balsam of peru (fragrances), eosin dyes, menthol, or cinnamic acid can cause eyelid dermatitis. In individuals with atopic dermatitis, these ingredients might also cause reactions when used on the cheeks as a blush,” she adds.

lipstick instead of blush: The doctor goes on to mention that lip products may contain different ingredients than those formulated for the eyes or cheeks, so it is important to check the product’s label for any warnings or specific usage recommendations.

Always prioritise products specifically designed for the intended area to minimise the risk of adverse reactions.

lipstick instead of blush: Dr Cornuit warns that using lip products on other parts of the face may lead to various side effects, including:

  • Irritation: Ingredients in lip products, such as fragrances or certain dyes, may irritate more sensitive areas like the eyes or cheeks.
  • Allergic reactions: If you have allergies to specific ingredients in lip products, applying them to other facial areas could trigger allergic reactions, resulting in redness, itching, or swelling.
  • Breakouts: Some lip products contain comedogenic ingredients that can clog pores and lead to acne or breakouts when applied to areas with oil glands.
  • Dryness: Lip products often contain moisturising agents suitable for the lips, but they may not provide the same level of hydration for other facial areas, potentially causing dryness.

What to do instead?

  • Using hypoallergenic makeup that is fragrance-free would be a good option if you wish to use one product for multiple purposes.
  • It’s also wise to avoid experimenting with products over the eyelids.
  • Instead of using lip products on other parts of the face, it’s advisable to opt for multi-use products that are specifically formulated and tested for use on multiple areas.
  • This can help minimise the risk of adverse reactions and ensure safer application across different parts.
