Authorities have disclosed the confirmed cause of death for Miller, the son of New York Yankees athlete Brett Gardner.

Costa Rican judicial officials revealed Wednesday that carbon monoxide poisoning caused the 14-year-old’s fatal incident during a family trip to Central America on April 2.

Judicial Investigation Department director Randall Zúñiga informed media outlets that toxicology reports showed elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels. This compound forms in blood cells when inhaling carbon monoxide, according to medical sources.

Medical experts consider concentrations exceeding 50% life-threatening. The teenager’s autopsy revealed 64% saturation along with tissue deposits indicating gas exposure.

“Crucially, investigators identified an adjacent mechanical room that might have leaked toxic fumes into the living quarters,” Zúñiga emphasized during the briefing.

Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort previously disputed initial reports of dangerous gas levels, asserting their facilities showed “no detectable or harmful concentrations” days prior.

Media outlets have contacted the resort for updated responses following the official findings.

The Yankees organization shared devastating news through social media in March regarding the family’s loss.

“Our hearts break as we confirm the passing of our beloved Miller. The 14-year-old fell critically ill alongside relatives during vacation before dying peacefully in his sleep March 21,” the family statement read.

Loved ones described the teenager as “a radiant spirit who brightened every room” through his warm personality.

“We extend gratitude for the overwhelming support and request privacy during this painful time. Our thoughts remain with others enduring similar unimaginable losses,” the message concluded.

Initial speculation about food-related poisoning was dismissed weeks earlier when investigators excluded suffocation as a factor.

Judicial official Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia initially cautioned that autopsy conclusions might require three months due to Costa Rica’s overloaded forensic system and rising caseloads.

“This complex investigation involves multiple agencies collaborating to determine precise circumstances,” Garcia noted during early proceedings.

Forensic specialists later conducted environmental tests revealing hazardous gas concentrations in the family’s accommodations, as shown in an official YouTube update March 31.

“Our hazardous materials team identified carbon monoxide levels sufficient to cause fatalities, potentially originating from nearby mechanical systems,” Zúñiga explained in the video statement.

Investigators continue examining potential contamination pathways between the machinery space and guest rooms.
