Trump Weighs in on Rising Egg Prices: Claims They’re Dropping Too Low for Comfort

Donald Trump has recently shared his thoughts on the rising cost of eggs in the United States.
During an appearance at the White House in Washington, D.C., on April 18, the 78-year-old president commented on egg prices and the economic landscape while addressing the press after Dr. Mehmet Oz was sworn in as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Trump praised Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, stating she is doing “a great job,” before asserting that egg prices “are down 87%, but nobody talks about that.”
“You can have all the eggs you want. We have too many eggs. In fact, if anything, the prices are getting too low. So I just want to let you know that the prices are down,” he remarked.
According to data from the Department of Agriculture, the average wholesale price of eggs on April 19 was $3.13, which represented a slight increase from the previous week. In February, eggs were priced at $5.90, nearly a dollar more than the $4.95 they cost in January, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“Price levels to the consumer have eased considerably from early-year highs but remain at levels that are not yet conducive to more than normal purchase needs,” the Department of Agriculture stated.
Reducing grocery and overall goods prices has been one of Trump’s central promises for the 2024 campaign. He pledged that, if elected, he would “immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.”
However, after Trump assumed office and the economic challenges persisted, the White House appeared to recognize that the president has limited control over specific inflationary pressures—many of which were influenced by events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.
During his April 18 press session, Trump elaborated further on consumer prices nationwide.
“By the way, prices are down. Groceries are down,” he stated. “Eggs, which they — you hit me so hard. I’ll never forget the first day, the first week in office, they were screaming at me about eggs.”
He continued, “I said, ‘What’s going on with eggs?’ They were doubling and tripling. I said, ‘I just got here.’ They were up like double, triple, and you couldn’t get any.”
Trump concluded, “They said you won’t have eggs for Easter. Well, you can have all the eggs you want.”
