Travis Kelce Goes Wild for Guardians’ Comeback Win Over Yankees — and Defends His Fandom After Taylor Swift Date
Travis Kelce is making sure his fans know that he’s a Cleveland Guardians fan!
The NFL star and native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio celebrated his home team’s dramatic 7-5 extra-innings win in Game 3 of the ALCS against the New York Yankees on Thursday, Oct. 17 and defended his appearance — literally — earlier this week at Yankee Stadium with girlfriend Taylor Swift.
“Playoff baseball baby!!!” Kelce wrote on X immediately after the win. “@CleGuardians have the city absolutely ROCKIN TONIGHT!! What a game!”
After commenters questioned why he didn’t wear Guardians gear during Game 1 with Swift back on Monday, Oct. 14, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end set the record straight.
“I’ve been a cleveland sports fan my entire life,” Kelce, 35, wrote on X. “Make it back to countless amount of games over the years both Guards and Cavs just to enjoy these memories with my friends and family, WIN OR LOSE!!… and I don’t wear Cleveland gear one time and all of a sudden I’m not a real fan?! Ask anybody that was in or around that suite on game 1 who I was cheering for, they’ll let you know I was there for the @CleGuardians.”
For the first game of the series in the Bronx, Kelce sported a black and white outfit topped with a ball cap that read “Midnight Rodeo.”
Earlier this week on his New Heights podcast, the athlete noted that he was “a Cleveland kid” who wanted to see his team win a World Series.
“It was mixed feelings because I was there trying to have some fun with Tay and everybody. All our friends [came],” he said. “We had [an] unbelievable crew, with us and hanging with us.”
He added, “And, you know, it was, it was fun. Even though the [Guardians] couldn’t pull it off, it was still an exciting, exciting game. And it was cool to see Yankee Stadium because I’ve always wanted to see that thing in person in a playoff game, in a hostile environment, and it didn’t disappoint, man. The Yankees, the fans, the players, everybody involved, man. It was awesome.”
During the game, Kelce also reconnected with former teammate Gehrig Dieter, a lifelong Yankees fan who was the target of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ razzing when the Kansas City Royals played the Yankees in the ALDS on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Mahomes, 29, was seen in a suite skipping over to the former Chiefs receiver, bumping into him and giving him an earful about the play — though the QB’s Royals lost the game, and the series, in the end.
This Monday, Dieter, 31, and his 3-year-old daughter hung out with Kelce and Swift, and later, the retired NFL player shared a carousel of images from the evening.
“Yanks win,” he wrote. “Memories of a lifetime with Gigi ❤️”
