Timothée Chalamet Sports a Mustache and Glasses on Set of New Film Marty Supreme in New York City
Timothée Chalamet is stepping into a new role.
The 28-year-old actor was spotted on the set of his film Marty Supreme in New York City on Monday, Sept. 30, looking arguably unrecognizable in a mustache and glasses. Chalamet finished the look in a collared shirt under a navy vest and brown trousers, with his hair in a slicked-back style.
As Variety reported in July, Marty Supreme is inspired by professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman. The film is directed by Josh Safdie, from a script by Safdie, 40, and Ronald Bronstein.
A24 announced the news in a July 15 post on X, alongside a graphic of a ping-pong ball emblazoned with the words, “MARTY SUPREME” and “MADE IN AMERICA,” separated by three stars.
The following month, it was announced that Gwyneth Paltrow would be joining the cast, after years of focusing on her various businesses.
Paltrow’s casting news marks her return to film after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in which she reprised her role as Pepper Potts from the Iron Man franchise.
Marty Supreme is the Academy Award winner’s first credit since lending her voice to a 2023 episode of American Horror Stories and an uncredited moment in the 2022 biopic She Said. From 2019 to 2020, she starred in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Politician.
Paltrow, 52, previously indicated that she was stepping away from acting to focus on lifestyle and wellness brand Goop, which she founded in 2008.
“I’m still going to do a little bit here and there, but this really requires almost all of my time,” she said on Today back in 2017. “I had an incredible acting career, but I had this deep passion to produce content and make great products and curate things.”
“It sort of evolved slowly and had a long gestational period and now it’s like, a real business,” the Shakespeare in Love star added.
As for Chalamet, Marty Supreme isn’t his only recent project for which he has undergone a bit of a physical transformation. The Oscar nominee can next be seen as a young Bob Dylan in the upcoming biographical drama A Complete Unknown, from director James Mangold.
Scheduled for release on Christmas Day, the film delves into Dylan’s arrival in New York City at age 19 and his rise to fame, culminating in his controversial electric set at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
Chalamet’s performance has already generated buzz, with the first teaser showcasing him singing Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” after he’s introduced by Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), a notable mentor and early supporter of the musician.
The film also covers Dylan’s relationships with key figures like Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and Sylvie Russo, a character played by Elle Fanning who is roughly based on Dylan’s girlfriend in the early 1960s, Suze Rotolo.
The ensemble cast will portray other real-life icons such as Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook) and Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), who influenced Dylan’s early career.
