Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan: In photos obtained by PEOPLE, Chalamet channeled Dylan, 82, in a classically ‘60s outfit while holding a worn guitar case in his hand as he walked the city streets dressed in jeans, a green jacket, an orange scarf, a paperboy hat and had a large yellow backpack on his back.
Beside him, a retro-looking car drove by, setting the scene for the biopic, which will reportedly center around Dylan’s controversial transition to the electric guitar in the ’60s and his road to becoming a folk music legend, per Deadline.
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan: Not much is known about the biopic, though Mangold previously confirmed that Chalamet will be singing in character as Dylan in the film — his latest musical feat following Wonka.
“It’s such an amazing time in American culture, and the story of Bob’s — a young, 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years,” Mangold, 60, told Collider last year.
“First being embraced into a family of folk music in New York and of course kind of outrunning him at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief.”
The biopic will also include some other notable figures from the era, including Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, who all “have a role to play in this movie,” Mangold told the outlet.
“It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene,” he added.
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan: Deadline reported that Edward Norton joined the movie’s cast as folk singer Seeger, replacing Benedict Cumberbatch, who stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. Elle Fanning will also star, playing Dylan’s love interest, Sylvie Russo.
Back in January, Chalamet visited Dylan’s high school in Hibbing, Minnesota, as he prepared for the role. During the visit, he spent some time with the Hibbing High School drama department, which they detailed in a post on Facebook the following day,
“HHS Drama accidentally blew up the internet: We spent about 45 minutes with Timothée Chalamet yesterday at the historic Hibbing Auditorium,” the school’s drama department wrote in the post. “He was a total gem. In town researching all things Bob Dylan for an upcoming biopic, he asked his tour guide if he could meet with the drama students who were working on their competition one act.”
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan: Chalamet posed with several students, who were rehearsing for a production of The Girl in the White Pinafore, and he “sat down with them one on one, and talked acting and theater.”
“After our guest left, our students had their final dress rehearsal. And they nailed it. Something must have inspired them,” the post added.
