Shania Twain Says Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ Cover Is a ‘Huge Compliment’

During the Toronto stop of her Short n’ Sweet Tour on Sept. 25, Carpenter performed a cover of Twain’s 1997 hit “That Don’t Impress Me Much” — and the country icon loved her rendition.

“It’s just a huge compliment,” said Twain, 59, in an interview with E! News at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, which she hosted. “I mean, [Carpenter is] such a talented person! She’s smart, so it’s a compliment.”

Carpenter’s been performing a different cover song each night on the Short n’ Sweet Tour, but her choice to sing Twain’s classic hit was especially fitting, as the “You’re Still the One” musician is from Ontario, Canada.

Since the tour launched Sept. 23, the “Nonsense” performer has delivered covers of ABBA’s “Mamma Mia,” Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.”

The Short n’ Sweet Tour continues its North American leg through November 18, before the European leg runs for 14 shows in March 2025.

Recently, Carpenter connected with Christina Aguilera to perform a rendition of the Burlesque star’s 1999 single, “What a Girl Wants,” to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her self-titled debut album in collaboration with Spotify.

During the link-up, Carpenter gushed to Aguilera, 43, about the impact she made on her as a child.

“I think the first time I ever heard your voice was [when] my mom played me a video of you singing at eight years old, ‘A Sunday Kind of Love’,” Carpenter told Aguilera, referring to her 1990 performance of the Etta James classic on Star Search. “That was the most inspiring thing for me ever to see as a young girl that wanted to sing but just didn’t think I could do it at that age.”

At the 2024 PCCAs, Twain spoke to PEOPLE about how her past vocal-cord surgery helped her overcome her stage fright. “I lost my voice, my singing voice, for several years. Regaining that [and] having to go through open-throated surgery to get it back reset my reality,” she said.

She then explained how she persevered: “When you realize that you have another chance at something that you love, you take it and you put fear aside to do it — and that’s what I did.”
