Sarah Paulson Says Holland Taylor Has the ‘Best Style’ Thanks to Clothing She’s Kept ‘Since the Dawn of Time’

Holland Taylor has been building her wardrobe for decades — and, according to her longtime partner Sarah Paulson, it’s paid off.

While chatting with PEOPLE at J.Crew’s Catalog & Fall Campaign celebration during New York Fashion Week, Paulson, 49, said that her girlfriend of nine years “has the best style of anyone on the planet.”

“The thing about Holland wearing any item of clothing [is] she just makes it look like it costs so much money,” she told PEOPLE at the star-studded Sept. 5 event, which was held at the New York Public Library.

Added Paulson: “It’s just her way of moving through the world.”

Underscoring her point, the Tony winner told PEOPLE that if the couple wore the same pair of sweatpants, Taylor, 81, would look as though she bought them at “the most fancy shop in town,” whereas she (in her exact words) would look “like a garbage bag.”

Elaborating on Taylor’s style strengths, Paulson explained that her longtime love “has a very beautiful way of doing a kind of monochromatic dressing” — not to mention a closet brimming with grail pieces she’s amassed over the years.

“Holland has clothing that she’s had since the dawn of time,” Paulson said with a laugh. “And she really won’t get rid of them, and it’s because they look gorgeous on her. They still fit her.”

“She’s a perfect example of: she knows what works on her, she sticks with it and she just always looks so great,” she added.

Paulson has an added layer of appreciation for Taylor’s timeless personal style because achieving that kind of authenticity and cohesion with her own wardrobe has been, put simply, a challenge.

“For a long time, I would look at my closet and it looked just kind of chaotic to me, and different versions,” the actress told PEOPLE, recalling how she would peer inside and think, “I don’t know who this person is in this closet.”

“And on one level that used to be what I felt was good for me about my closet, was that I could go in there and become anyone when I wanted to be,” she said. “But now, I’m searching more for a little bit more simplicity and clarity, and so I have a lot of the same things.”

But, Paulson added, these repeat-pieces “feel all more like me, rather than like different people I’d like to be for the day.”
