Prince William Brings His Earthshot Prize to Cape Town, South Africa: See the Best Photos!
Organizers call it Prince William’s “Superbowl moment” — the Prince of Wales’ annual Earthshot Prize Awards, which this year is in Cape Town, South Africa for its fourth iteration.
Following stops in London in 2021, Boston in 2022 and Singapore in 2023, William, 42, is taking his environmental initiative to its fourth continent in as many years as he touched down in Cape Town on Monday, Nov. 4. Really, as the Earthshot Prize Awards heads to Africa, its heading back to where it all began: after a trip to Namibia in 2018, the royal was inspired to launch The Earthshot Prize two years later, in 2020.
After the Namibia visit eight years ago, Prince William was “inspired by projects which were working to protect their environment and support local communities,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said. “The prince was frustrated by the pessimism and despair of the global debate and wanted to find a way to spotlight and scale the innovative solutions he was seeing on the ground.”
So he created The Earthshot Prize, where annually 15 finalists compete for a $1.3 million prize across the organization’s five categories of Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate. The awards are handed out at an annual awards ceremony, and the prize money winners receive goes towards scaling winners’ respective ventures.
“We search for proven solutions that, if scaled, could be transformative in their impact,” Earthshot Prize CEO Hannah Jones said.
She added, “Unlike most prizes, we don’t give awards to people for what they’ve already achieved. We reward for the future potential of their inventions.”
Of the poignant return to where the idea originated, “We are extremely excited to be hosting this event in Africa, where we will celebrating innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity from across the continent, which are contributing to efforts to protect the planet,” the Kensington Palace spokesperson added of this year’s ceremony.

Preparing the Superdome for the Big Show
This year’s awards ceremony, which will happen on Wednesday, Nov. 6, will take place in a vast, reusable Superdome, seen here under construction. The Earthshot Prize Dome seats 2,000 people and, in keeping with the event’s sustainability theme, has already been used in many events across Africa. The structure was designed and engineered in South Africa, and the production of the Earthshot Prize Awards itself is creating about 650 jobs locally, contributing significantly to Cape Town’s creative industries.
The green carpet outside of the Earthshot Prize Dome is said to be the longest ever seen, according to organizers, and Jones said, “I think you will see a lot more dancing in the event than you did before.”

“I ran into him in the drill, and he was really cool about it,” Stransky laughs. “What was cool too was he comes into this environment and talks to kids from different walks of life and different backgrounds. To chat to the kids the way he did and ask the right questions was really cool.”
Stransky adds of William’s athletic skills, “He’s a good ball player. You could see he’s a natural. I should think he loves it and doesn’t get enough chance to do it. I hope he enjoyed it as much as we did.”

“I really loved having a conversation with Prince William about the importance of support for rangers,” Irwin said, via Hello!. “They are on the front line of conservation, and you have to remember that these days, conservation can be a dangerous business. And it’s really nice to know that Prince William is ensuring rangers are valued and they get the resources and the support they need. Very encouraging steps in the right direction. It’s great that William is putting himself behind this. Protecting the environment is about protecting people, too.”
Of the Earthshot Prize, Irwin said, per the BBC, “For the first time we have an environmental movement on a scale we’ve never seen before.”

Of the work of The Earthshot Prize, which Prince William is in Cape Town celebrating this week, “Earthshot is filling a desperately needed gap in terms of giving visibility to game-changing solutions from all over the world, in all different sectors,” Mary Allen, creative director of Natural Fiber Welding, told PEOPLE of Prince William’s environmental initiative. “Every founder’s story here is different. By bringing us together, it gives us an opportunity to learn and grow together and cross-pollinate. It’s hard to measure the impact of that, but it’s invaluable. The Prince of Wales Announces Landmark Initiative for Rangers
At the 2024 United for Wildlife Global Showcase, Prince William’s fourth stop of the day, he announced an ambitious initiative to protect and support rangers, specifically mentioning ranger Anton Mzimba, whose 2022 murder profoundly affected and impacted him.
His five-year plan will provide 10,000 rangers with access to appropriate, affordable insurance coverage, together with opportunities for training and leadership development.
Of rangers specifically, Prince William said in his remarks at the event, “Rangers are fundamental if we are to meet our global conservation targets for 2030 and prevent the dangerous tipping points that threaten our planet. These people do far more than protect wildlife. They are educators. They are community supporters. And they help regulate the sustainable use of natural resources. Yet, far too often, they lack sufficient support, with rangers in particular facing inadequate pay and protection.”

Prince William Speaks Out in Solidarity with Rangers at 2024 United for Wildlife Global Showcase
“This has come into even sharper focus over the past two years, following the murder of Anton Mzimba here in South Africa,” Prince William continued. “Anton was assassinated in his home for doing his job … protecting the incredible biodiversity of this country. Currently, fewer than 300,000 rangers are working globally, but estimates suggest we need five times that number to properly meet our conservation commitments. We cannot protect our planet without a well-supported workforce.”
“What happens over the next five years, especially in relation to stopping the illegal wildlife trade, is crucial for the future of life on Earth,” he said as he began to conclude his speech. “The urgency is palpable, as entire parts of the species chain are being removed. As we look to 2030 and beyond, we have the power, and opportunity, to change the trajectory. While the challenge may still be complex, the path is now clearer.”

Prince William Meets Up with The Earthshot Prize’s 15 Finalists Ahead of Awards Ceremony
The same day he met up with the 15 finalists of The Earthshot Prize Awards, Prince William also shared insight into life at home with Kate and their three children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
“Yeah, well, you know, every family tries to do what they can to sort of help with the environment,” he said of their life at home in Windsor. “We go through all the basics of recycling and making sure we minimize water use and turning off lights when we leave the house and stuff like that, and making sure, which is sensible, in what we do around the environment.”
“I think every family has these conversations. You just try to do what you can,” he added.
Of daughter Charlotte in particular, the prince said that she had made him a friendship bracelet to remind him of his family while he was away. “Well, this is a relic, if you like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided that she wanted to create a bracelet for,” William explained of his accessory. “She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised that I’d wear it and try not to lose while I was out here.”
Of all three of his kids, Prince William said, “tonight I hope they are watching and they are proud of kind of what we are trying to do here, which is to really galvanize that energy that enthusiasm to make real impact.”

“I think everyone wants some hope and wants some optimism,” he added. “I think the Earthshot encompasses urgent optimism. That’s what we’re here for. And as I think you will see tonight, the amount of youth from Africa who’ll be in here. They’ll be letting you know and letting everyone know that it matters to them.”
