Phoebe Gates’ Boyfriend’s Art Rebellion: The $20 Painting Face-Off

Phoebe Gates, daughter of tech magnate Bill Gates, shared in a recent interview with *The New York Times* that she owns a painting she purchased at a market for about $20. The artwork hangs in her bedroom, but her boyfriend, Arthur Donald, apparently isn’t a fan.

Fashion entrepreneur Phoebe Gates has a fondness for pink, which extends to her bedroom décor. However, one particular piece of art doesn’t quite resonate with her boyfriend.

In the interview, the 22-year-old revealed that she lives in a loft-style apartment in New York City with a bedroom featuring pale pink walls. Above her bureau hangs a painting of a pink cassette tape, a market find that cost her around $20.

Phoebe, who recently launched a new online shopping tool called Phia with friend and former roommate Sophia Kianni, mentioned that Arthur Donald, her boyfriend of nearly two years, “hates” the painting. He dislikes it so much that he removes it from the wall whenever he visits. The couple is now on the lookout for a replacement.

Arthur Donald, grandson of Beatles legend Paul McCartney, resides in California but frequently travels to New York City to spend weekends with Phoebe, according to *The New York Times*. The pair’s connection began when Phoebe collaborated with designer Stella McCartney, Arthur’s aunt.

Arthur is the eldest son of Mary McCartney and her ex-husband, TV producer Alistair Donald.

Phoebe officially confirmed their relationship back in June when she shared a graduation photo diary with *Nylon* after graduating from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in human biology. The diary included candid photos of herself with Arthur.

In one caption, she referred to Arthur as her boyfriend, and in another, she playfully noted, “He cleans up nicely.”

Earlier this month, Phoebe discussed her past insecurities regarding the “nepo baby” label, given her background as the daughter of a billionaire tech mogul. During the April 1 episode of her new podcast, *The Burnouts*, co-hosted with business partner Kianni, Phoebe recalled feeling significant pressure upon arriving at Stanford for her freshman year.

“I had so much insecurity and, like, such a desire to prove myself. I was like, I have so much privilege. I’m a nepo baby,” she stated.

She reiterated these sentiments in her *The New York Times* interview, saying, “Growing up, I realized that people are always going to have thoughts about me.”

Phoebe explained that building and launching Phia only amplified her insecurities surrounding the subject.

“If the business is successful, people will say, ‘It’s because of her family,'” she told the publication. “And a huge portion of that is true. I never would have been able to go to Stanford, or have such an amazing upbringing, or feel the drive to do something, if it wasn’t for my parents. But I also feel a huge amount of internalized pressure.”
