Megan Moroney Opens Up About Her Solo Journey: “A Year of Bad Choices in Love!”

Megan Moroney is recognized for her breakup songs — and she doesn’t need to search far for motivation.
The country artist, 27, featured on the cover of Rolling Stone’s Future of Music series, disclosed that she has been unattached since early last year, when she ended things with “a regular finance guy.”
Moroney then displayed some self-criticism, admitting that she hasn’t always chosen the right partners.
“I feel like I’ve consistently had poor taste in men,” she remarked. “I had a really nice boyfriend in fifth grade, and I broke up with him because I wanted to pursue the eighth-grade troublemaker who had failed a bunch of times… I’m not sure if this song will make my next album, but an opening line is ‘I know how to select them. Copy, paste.’”
While the “Tennessee Orange” artist certainly desires her happy ending, she clarified that being single during her rise to country fame has actually been beneficial.
“I couldn’t envision going through the past year if I was heartbroken and crying over a guy,” she shared with RS.
Moroney, who launched her second album Am I Okay? in July, kept her previous relationship out of the limelight, but did allude to their separation in May while promoting her track “Man on the Moon.”
In a video posted on TikTok, she queried her fans why they would want to send a man to the moon and answered her own inquiry, stating, “I’ll go first. Once upon a time I dated a guy who claimed he didn’t need to know my songs [because] I didn’t know much about his finance job.”
The artist was recently associated with country singer Riley Green, but dismissed any romance rumors to Rolling Stone, explaining they both happened to be vacationing in St. Barts separately at the same time.
“It’s one of those scenarios where if you know someone on a small island, you’re like, ‘Oh, s—, you’re here too.’ So it was fun.” Are you dating?” she said. “Just because we’re hanging out doesn’t mean we’re romantically involved. You know what I mean?”
She was also previously associated with Morgan Wallen, who was speculated to be the inspiration behind her breakout hit “Tennessee Orange.” Moroney later confirmed that she was wearing his shirt in the song’s promotional material, and stated on Call Her Daddy in July that they did have a romantic connection after meeting in 2020, but were “never exclusively” involved.
“We were friends for a considerable time. We were not just friends. And now we’re friends,” she explained.
Moroney told PEOPLE that same month that dating had taken a slight back seat in her list of priorities lately, and that she has never “been more single.”
“I really don’t have time for it currently,” she admitted. “I tried dating for a moment and then I quickly realized that now is not the right moment. I think in the album you get that vibe. The love songs were very fleeting!”
She continued, “Unfortunately a significant amount of my personal life centers around my professional life, so that’s why dating currently is just not something that occupies my thoughts. I don’t really stress about it too much.”
Moroney is poised to commence a headlining tour in March that will keep her performing until October. The star is scheduled to receive the Rulebreaker Award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards later this month, and also recently appeared on NPR Music’s cherished Tiny Desk Concert series.
