Matthew Gaudreau’s Widow Marks His First Birthday Since His Tragic Death: ‘Can’t Wait to Kiss Your Face Again’
The widow of late hockey star Matthew Gaudreau paid tribute to him on social media with a touching post marking his first birthday since his tragic death.
Just over three months since Matthew and his brother, NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, were killed by an alleged drunk driver while biking the night before their sister’s wedding, his widow Madeline Gaudreau shared an Instagram post to celebrate what would have been his 30th birthday.
The tribute included a photo of the couple looking lovingly into each other’s eyes, followed by a touching caption about their relationship.
“Happy Birthday to the best husband and father 🤍 the moment I met you I instantly knew you were the one. As I celebrate you today (and everyday) I am more and more in love with you and honored to be your wife,” Madeline wrote, before adding a note for Johnny.
“John better have friends playing all day, double stuff Oreos and a nice glass of whiskey for you. 💙🦋 I love you and can’t wait to kiss your face again.”
Madeline — who is currently pregnant with her and Matthew’s first child Tripp — recently celebrated her baby shower in October.
In photos shared on Madeline’s Instagram, of the celebration, she thanked her family and friends.
“Baby Shower of my Dreams 🤍🕊️,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “Thank you @gabriellevasaturo for hosting. @bitesizedsis you’re amazing, my husband would have loved all the balloons. The way you were able to tie in my husband brought instant tears when I walked in.”
“All my friends and family, nothing [will] bring his dad back, [or] Uncle John back, but I am glad he has so many amazing people around him to remind him how amazing they were 💙,” she continued, speaking about her son.
Matthew and Johnny, 31, were tragically killed when a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol struck and killed them in Oldmans Township, N.J. just after 8 p.m on Aug. 29.
New Jersey State Police said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time that the driver, identified as Sean M. Higgins, was attempting to pass another car when he fatally struck the brothers.
Johnny and Matthew were in town for their sister Katie Gaudreau’s wedding — which was rescheduled from its Aug. 30 date after the sudden death of the bride’s brothers — where they were set to serve as groomsmen.
