Martin Short’s Early Years
Martin Short entered the world on March 26, 1950, in Ontario, Canada. Although he displayed indications of becoming a performer from an early age, Britannica points out that it was not until his college peers, including Eugene Levy, spurred him to genuinely chase the craft.

Martin Short in ‘Godspell’
One of his initial professional appearances came in a 1972 performance of Godspell in Toronto, which also included comedians Andrea Martin, Levy, and Gilda Radner — who he was romantically linked to at that time.
It was in this production that he met his future wife Nancy Dolman, as she was brought on as Radner’s understudy. After his romance with Radner ended, he started dating Dolman, as he disclosed on an episode of the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson & Woody Harrelson.

Martin Short and Second City
In 1977, Martin became a member of Toronto’s Second City, where talents like Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, and Dave Thomas (depicted here with Short in the 1980s) also established their comedic careers.
Short later joined the cast of Second City TV (SCTV) before entering the lineup of Saturday Night Live.

Martin Short on ‘Saturday Night Live’
Short was a member of the Saturday Night Live ensemble for just one season, having joined the comedic sketch program for its tenth season in 1984. This cast featured fellow comedic luminaries Billy Crystal, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Christopher Guest.
In the years that followed, Short returned to host the program on numerous occasions and became a member of the esteemed Five-Timers Club in December 2024.

Martin Short Appears in ‘Three Amigos’
In 1986, Short starred alongside Steve Martin and Chevy Chase in Three Amigos! This film not only marked a significant moment in his career, but it was also where he and Martin met for the initial time, initiating their longstanding friendship.

Martin Short and Nancy Dolman’s Union
Short and Dolman (as depicted in 1986) wed in 1980 and enjoyed 30 years of marriage before her passing in 2010 from ovarian cancer.
In 2019, Short candidly discussed his wife’s death in a feature story with AARP the Magazine.
“Our union was a victory. Thus, it’s challenging. She passed away in 2010, yet I still converse with her daily. It’s ‘Hey Nan,’ you know? How would she respond to this choice or that one, especially concerning our three children,” he remarks about their shared offspring Henry, Oliver, and Katherine.
Martin Short Becomes a Father
Short and Dolman welcomed their first child, Katherine (shown above) in 1983. The family subsequently expanded with the arrival of son Oliver in 1986 and Henry in 1989.
Martin Short Earns a Tony Award
Throughout his career, Short has received numerous accolades, including the 1999 Tony Award for his portrayal in Little Me.
Little Me marked his second role on Broadway. His debut on the Great White Way was in 1993’s The Goodbye Girl.
Martin Short’s Lifelong Friendship with Steve Martin
Short reunited with Martin in 2021 for Only Murders in the Building, which concluded its fourth season in October 2024. The show, featuring Selena Gomez as one-third of their mystery-loving group, has showcased a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Jane Lynch, Eva Longoria, and Jesse Williams.
Martin Short Nowadays
For his role in Only Murders, Short garnered his first ever SAG Award in 2025 for outstanding male actor in a comedy series, despite missing the event due to illness after contracting COVID at the SNL50: The Anniversary Special in New York City.
A fifth season of Only Murders commenced production in March and will involve “another significant fun mystery the writers have been developing,” executive producer Dan Fogelman shared with TheWrap.
