Martin Short’s Early Years

Martin Short entered the world on March 26, 1950, in Ontario, Canada. Although he displayed indications of becoming a performer from an early age, Britannica points out that it was not until his college peers, including Eugene Levy, spurred him to genuinely chase the craft.

One of his initial professional appearances came in a 1972 performance of Godspell in Toronto, which also included comedians Andrea Martin, Levy, and Gilda Radner — who he was romantically linked to at that time.

It was in this production that he met his future wife Nancy Dolman, as she was brought on as Radner’s understudy. After his romance with Radner ended, he started dating Dolman, as he disclosed on an episode of the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name with Ted Danson & Woody Harrelson.

Short was a member of the Saturday Night Live ensemble for just one season, having joined the comedic sketch program for its tenth season in 1984. This cast featured fellow comedic luminaries Billy Crystal, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Christopher Guest.

In the years that followed, Short returned to host the program on numerous occasions and became a member of the esteemed Five-Timers Club in December 2024.

How would she respond to this choice or that one, especially concerning our three children,” he remarks about their shared offspring Henry, Oliver, and Katherine.

For his role in Only Murders, Short garnered his first ever SAG Award in 2025 for outstanding male actor in a comedy series, despite missing the event due to illness after contracting COVID at the SNL50: The Anniversary Special in New York City.

A fifth season of Only Murders commenced production in March and will involve “another significant fun mystery the writers have been developing,” executive producer Dan Fogelman shared with TheWrap.

Until then, Short will celebrate his 75th birthday on March 26, 2025!
