Kimberly Guilfoyle ‘Very’ Happy with Greece Appointment, Source Says ‘Do Not Feel Sorry for Her’ (Exclusive)

Kimberly Guilfoyle is preparing for a new chapter following news of her new political appointment in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration and a split with his son and her former fiancé, Donald Trump Jr.

A source with knowledge of the Trump family dynamics tells PEOPLE that Guilfoyle, 55, is “very much” happy with her nomination to be Trump’s U.S. ambassador to Greece — an appointment that was announced on Dec. 10, one day after Don Jr., 46, was seen holding hands with Florida socialite Bettina Anderson.

Since then, a political insider told PEOPLE on Dec. 11 that “Don Jr. has been dating Bettina for about six months,” while another source said that “Bettina wants Kim out of the area,” and that the 38-year-old and Don Jr. “are trying to send Kim abroad.”

Then, on Dec. 12, PEOPLE learned that Guilfoyle and Don Jr. have broken up, with a family insider saying, “It’s not a contentious thing. It’s an amicable split.”

The source clarifies that Guilfoyle “is not being shunted off” to Greece. Instead, “she’s being given a very plum reward.”

While addressing reports that Anderson and Don Jr. want Guilfoyle out of the country, the family insider says, “Do not feel sorry for her, or think she’s being pushed off to the side. I’d be far from feeling sorry for her. I think she’s about to catapult into her next chapter, you know, into the diplomatic world. I think that would be very rewarding for her.”

“It might be seen as getting her out of the way, but this one’s a substantive assignment,” they explain, adding later that they “have no clue” if the breakup was behind the president-elect’s decision and that Guilfoyle and Don Jr. “just kind of grew apart.”

According to Path to Foreign Service, “Ambassadors are the highest-ranking diplomats appointed by their government to represent their country in a specific foreign country or international organization. They serve as the official spokesperson for their government and act as a direct link between their country’s leadership and the receiving country or organization.”

When nominating Guilfoyle for the position, Trump said in a release posted to social media that he named her for the role as she’s been “a close friend and ally” for “many years.”

The president-elect also said that Guilfoyle was “perfectly suited” to foster “strong bilateral relations with Greece, advancing our interests on issues ranging from defense cooperation to trade and economic innovation.”

He added, “Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States, and safeguard its interests abroad.”

“Greece is seen as a good spot for her,” the source tells PEOPLE of her appointment, adding that while it could be considered “non-strategic,” “it’s still something notable.”

Further explaining that the position “could lead to something bigger,” the insider says, “I mean, if she does well, and some other ambassador departs, she could be someone to step in if she wants to pick it up. She’s got that choice.”

“Greece won’t be so crazy busy that she can’t do other things,” the insider continues. “It’s a beautiful setting. She will be treated well.”

As for her connection to the White House, Guilfoyle will still be in touch with Trump, whom she has a “strong” connection with, the source says: “She’s also going to be in a position to be able to communicate with the president about her perspective on what’s going on in Europe.”

PEOPLE has attempted to reach Don Jr., Anderson and Guilfoyle for comment about where their relationships stand, and requested comment from President-elect Trump about the timing of the nomination.
