Kevin Bacon & Jennifer Nettles Spark Instant Musical Chemistry Crafting Tracks for New Series (Exclusive)

Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Nettles might form an unexpectedly perfect musical partnership.

Their new Prime Video series The Bondsman, released April 3, features the pair portraying former lovers exploring renewed connections. A shared musical passion emerges in glimpses throughout the trailer.

Mirroring their on-screen roles, both artists possess impressive musical histories. For nearly three decades, Bacon, 66, has performed with brother Michael in The Bacon Brothers, while Nettles, 50, has captivated audiences since 2002 as part of country duo Sugarland.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bacon reveals collaborating on multiple original tracks with Nettles for the show. “We clicked immediately in songwriting sessions,” he shares. “Growing up composing since age twelve, then working with various collaborators, I found Jen’s country music background fostered natural creative synergy.”

The actors developed tunes through shared voice notes and impromptu brainstorming. “We’d exchange ideas like ‘What if we try this bridge?’ or ‘How about rewriting the second verse?'” Bacon explains. Their characters’ backstory involves a failed musical duo from 15 years prior, with Bacon portraying a self-sabotaging artist who “destroyed both his marriage and musical prospects through unwillingness to compromise.”

Costar Jolene Purdy witnessed their chemistry firsthand during filming breaks. “During downtime, Kevin casually grabbed a guitar and started rehearsing with Jennifer and actor Max,” Purdy recalls. “I secretly texted a friend: ‘Getting serenaded by Bacon and Nettles right now!’ It felt like an exclusive concert experience – except I got paid to be there!”
