Katie Gaudreau Says Late Brothers Johnny and Matthew Will Be ‘Dancing and Celebrating’ at Her Postponed Wedding

Katie Gaudreau, the sister of the late Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, knows that her brothers will be “dancing and celebrating” from beyond when her postponed wedding eventually takes place.

Katie was set to marry her fiancé Devin Joyce on Friday, Aug. 30, when NHL star Johnny and their brother Matthew were killed by a suspected drunk driver the night before the ceremony. The wedding was canceled as the family mourned, and tributes to the brothers have come in from their wives, relatives, NHL players and others in the last six days.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, Katie reshared a post from Joyce about how much his soon-to-be brother-in-laws meant to him, and added her own words.

“My brothers loved Devin more than he will ever know. They were so excited for us to get married,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories.

Her post continued, adding “When the day comes they are going to be dancing and celebrating more than anyone.”

Joyce’s post, meanwhile, included emotional words for Johnny and Matthew on his own Instagram page with a family photo.

“They say when you find the one, you’re not just marrying them but their family too. I know I never said it but I loved you guys so much,” he wrote. “I’m so lucky to have called you two my brothers for as long as I did.”

“There is not a second that will go by I will not look at Katie and see both of you. I promise to take the absolute best care of your little sister and I know when the day comes you will be with us on that day,” Joyce’s post continued.

On Monday, Sept. 2, Katie spoke out after they were killed by a driver while biking the evening before her wedding.

In an Instagram post, she spoke of the immoveable “bond” between their close-knit family.

“To know these two was to love these two,” she wrote. “There are absolutely no words I have to express the bond my family shared. The entire world knows there would never have been a John without Matty or Matty without John. The absolute best big brothers a little girl could have asked for.”

Katie also included sweet photos of the three of them through the years, plus their parents and older sister, from them as kids in a family kitchen to celebrating her engagement and Johnny and Matthew’s weddings.

“This will never be a goodbye post because I will never stop saying your names and honoring you both,” she continued. “I’ll take the best care of mom, dad, Kristen, Mer, and Madeline, your babies.”

Matthew and NHL star Johnny, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, were killed around 8 p.m. on Thursday when a driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol fatally hit both brothers, New Jersey State Police told PEOPLE. They were biking in their hometown the night before they were set to serve as groomsmen for Katie’s wedding.

Police identified Sean M. Higgins as the driver. He was arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto, according to the police. He is currently being held in jail.
