Joshua Jackson Gets Real: How Doctor Odyssey Turned the Teen Heartthrob into ‘Captain Zaddy’ (Exclusive)

Through his role in Doctor Odyssey, Joshua Jackson has evolved from a teenage idol to “zaddy” status — a transformation he wholeheartedly embraces.
During an interview with PEOPLE at the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, the 46-year-old actor reflected on growing up in the public eye since his Dawson’s Creek days during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As a father himself, Jackson now views becoming an adored TV partner as an achievement, declaring: “Mission accomplished after decades in the industry.”
“Crew members actually shouted ‘Zaddy!’ during filming,” he revealed with humor. “That’s a career milestone. I accepted it proudly – definitely earned that title.”
In a Thursday, April 3 discussion with Vulture, the performer addressed his origin story as a Tiger Beat magazine favorite, acknowledging that being dubbed “Daddy” still causes embarrassment despite on-camera references.
“My cheeks still flush hearing it, which probably means something positive. It’s not how I personally identify,” he confessed. “After 36 years in this business, I’m grateful people still watch my work.”
The television veteran admitted feeling “absolutely” self-conscious about becoming an object of fascination through these jokes.
“Let’s be real — those crisp white uniforms don’t hurt the image,” he quipped.
Jackson portrayed Pacey Witter during Dawson’s Creek’s 1998-2003 WB network run. The Massachusetts-set coming-of-age drama followed four young friends through adolescent struggles, co-starring James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams.
Twenty-plus years post-debut, Jackson now navigates new waters as Dr. Max Bankman, chief physician aboard a lavish cruise liner in Doctor Odyssey.
The actor shared insights with Vulture about modeling his shipboard medic after legendary screen physicians.
