Affleck’s Raw Emotion: The Story Behind His Father’s Tears

Timothy, father to sons Ben and Casey with his former wife Christine Anne “Chris” Boldt, separated from her and relocated from their Massachusetts residence to California when Ben was 12 years old.
In 2020, the star of *The Accountant 2* shared that his father, a former janitor, had reached 30 years of sobriety at that time.
He expressed “a tremendous amount of respect for what that takes and what that means,” speaking of his father. “Part of being an adult is learning that your parents are just people. They’re not perfect. They were just doing their best. As a child, we expect perfection out of our parents.”
Affleck described Criterion’s renowned collection, maintained by the home video distributor, as “my idea of heaven.” Beyond *The Elephant Man*, his selection of favorites to take home included *Miller’s Crossing* (1990), *The Silence of the Lambs* (1991), *Traffic* (2000), and two films in which he appeared: *Dazed and Confused* (1993) and *Armageddon* (1998).

He also lauded Jean Renoir’s 1939 classic *The Rules of the Game* for containing his “favorite line from all of cinema” — “Everyone has their reasons” — which he jokingly admitted to having “stolen” for his 2007 film *Gone Baby Gone*.
Affleck further praised Denzel Washington’s performance in Spike Lee’s 1992 biopic *Malcolm X*. “There is not a performance I can think of that’s better than this,” he said. “I remember where I was when I watched the movie, and I remember when I walked out, I thought, ‘I want to be a better man.’ ”
Affleck produces and stars alongside Jon Bernthal in *The Accountant 2*, directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Dubuque, currently in theaters. His upcoming projects include *Animals* with Gillian Anderson and *RIP* alongside longtime collaborator Matt Damon.
