Jim Harbaugh’s 7 Kids: All About the Football Coach’s Sons and Daughters — and How They’re Carrying on the Family’s Legacy
Jim Harbaugh has had a number of accomplishments in his lengthy career as a professional football player and coach, but they all pale in comparison to being a father to his kids: Jay, James, Grace, Addison, Katherine, Jack and John.
Jim welcomed his older kids — Jay, James and Grace — with his first wife, Miah Harbaugh. He later married Sarah Feuerborn Harbaugh, and they share four children — Addison, Katherine, Jack and John. According to the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, he’s taking a different approach with his younger daughters and sons.
Speaking to GQ in 2017, Jim revealed that he didn’t pressure his older kids to play sports, even though he “really wanted them to,” because of others’ advice. But when he became a father again later in life, Jim “had an epiphany” and decided to lean into his natural instincts.
“I’m going to coach them like I do my own players,” he told the magazine about encouraging them to get out on the field. “Not treat my kids any different than my own players, and not treat my players any different than my own kids.”
While several of Jim’s children have followed him into the world of athletics, he’s vowed to support them in whatever they decide to pursue.
Here’s everything to know about Jim Harbaugh’s kids: Jay, James, Grace, Addison, Katherine, Jack and John.
Jay Harbaugh, 35
Jim and Miah welcomed their son, Jay Harbaugh, on June 14, 1989.
Like his dad, Jay loved football from an early age and played in high school before a knee injury ended his career, he told The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Still, he wanted to be involved with sports and was an undergraduate assistant while studying sociology at Oregon State University. During this time, he also took an internship with the San Francisco 49ers.
After serving as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan for nine seasons, Jay was named special teams coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks in February 2024. He now lives in Washington with his family, including his wife Bhritney and their children, Jacob and Norma.
Jay and his dad are especially close. In 2016, Jim sent his heartfelt birthday wishes to his son, writing, “Happy 27th Birthday to Jay Harbaugh – Beloved Son, Trusted Agent & Known Friend!”
James Harbaugh Jr., 28
Jim and Miah welcomed their son, James Harbaugh Jr., on Sept. 4, 1996.
James shares his father’s real first name and alma mater, Michigan State University. But instead of football, James was involved in theater and performing arts, according to Detroit Free Press. He credited his dad for opening him up to the creative world when he took their family to a production of Wicked.
“I was blown away by it,” James said on the Two Outs podcast in October 2017. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is incredible, I’d love to be part of something that would make people feel this way.’ ”
These days, he works as a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, a job that allows him to fulfill his love of travel. Recent trips have included visits to Hawaii, Alaska, Vancouver, Japan and Tahiti.
“When I was younger, I always dreamed of working for an airline and traveling the world. Every time I saw the crew in the airport I’d think – that’ll be me someday!” he wrote on Instagram while announcing his job in August 2022. “Getting to work for my favorite airline is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to see where else, and who else it will take me to.”
James is encouraging of his dad and calls himself “the #1 Chargers fan” on X. Jim is also one of his son’s biggest champions and offered words of assurance when James came out to him in November 2016.
“He’s supported me in everything I’ve done,” James said on the Two Outs podcast. “I feel lucky in that regard that my entire family is supportive of me.”
Grace Harbaugh, 24
Jim and Miah welcomed their daughter Grace Harbaugh on June 27, 2000.
While studying at Michigan State University, Grace was part of the women’s water polo team. According to her school athlete bio, she was a lifelong swimmer and began playing the sport at 14 because of the team aspect.
“I found water polo and it was a combination of everything I loved about sports. I’ve been hooked ever since,” she added.
After completing her undergrad in 2023, Grace attended Michigan State University’s Ross School of Business, where she’s pursued a master’s in business management, per her LinkedIn.
She’s currently a social media intern at Fangirl Sports Network and a marketing and brand partnerships trainee at United Talent Agency.
In her free time, Grace enjoys posting on TikTok, where she has nearly 50,000 followers. In April 2024, she poked fun at her dad when he got his “M 15-0” tattoo to celebrate Michigan State University winning the national championship. He joked that he “should have gotten” a tattoo of her instead.
Addison Harbaugh, 15
Jim and Sarah welcomed their first daughter together, Addison Harbaugh, in 2008.
Addison, also known as Addie, spent most of her early life in Michigan while her dad coached at the college. She grew up playing sports and seemed to embrace her father’s philosophy, which he proudly documented on X.
“4th – 5th grade b-ball game, Fun watching the girls compete,” Jim wrote about one of her basketball games in January 2019. “My wife told my daughter that she was playing too aggressive and my daughter told my wife ‘if you’re not playing aggressive then you’re not trying hard enough’… never been prouder of her!”
Katherine Harbaugh, 14
Jim and Sarah welcomed their daughter Katherine Harbaugh on Dec. 17, 2010.
While the couple maintain the privacy of their children, Katherine, who also goes by Katie, has been spotted on the sidelines at her dad’s games. Jim has also dedicated rare tributes to her on social media.
“Happy 5th Birthday to my daughter & my love, Katie,” Jim captioned a photo of her on X in 2015. “You’ve made the last 1,826 days precious in each & every way.”
Jack Harbaugh, 12
Jim and Sarah welcomed their first son together, Jack Harbaugh, in 2012. He was named after his grandfather, the legendary NFL coach.
Over the years, Jim has shared glimpses of his adventures with Jack online, including having lunch at the beach and sailing in Michigan.
In February 2019, he posted a photo of them together at a football game, where his son was wearing a Tom Brady jersey. “Jack is my GOAT! 🐐,” the dad of seven wrote on Instagram.
Like his father, Jack enjoys playing football. He’s been seen at his dad’s games, where the pair have played catch on the sidelines in the past.
John Paul Harbaugh, 7
Jim and Sarah welcomed their son, John Paul Harbaugh, on Jan. 11, 2017.
Jim announced his birthday on X, writing, “Arriving early, weighing in at 4 lb 13 oz, with an 18 in wingspan, our newest Wolverine teammate, John Harbaugh. Precious… God is good.”
While the youngest Harbaugh family member was in the hospital, his siblings visited him. As he grew stronger, his dad celebrated milestones.
“John officially hit the 5 pound mark today!” he wrote, sharing a photo of his son in the hospital two weeks after his birth. “Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today!”
Later that same summer, Jim uploaded a video of him singing to his little one.
These days, John appears to be happy and healthy. In July 2019, Jim shared photos of him mowing the lawn with the caption, “John’s 1st day of lawn mowing apprenticeship, showed excellent promise!”
