**”Jay North, ‘Dennis the Menace’ Icon, Passes at 73: A Fond Farewell to TV’s Beloved Mischief-Maker”**

Jay North, renowned for portraying the mischievous lead in the classic TV show Dennis the Menace, has passed away at age 73, according to a confirmation from PEOPLE.
The actor’s longtime companion Laurie Jacobson, a producer and author, shared the news through a social media tribute on April 6. She revealed North succumbed to a lengthy cancer battle while surrounded by loved ones. His representative later verified the information to PEOPLE.
“We received heartbreaking news today from Jeanne Russell, Jay’s former co-star,” Jacobson expressed. “After courageously confronting illness for years, our beloved friend departed peacefully at his residence around midday Eastern Time.”
“While Hollywood’s challenges marked his early life, Jay refused to be confined by those struggles,” she continued. “His generous spirit and profound loyalty to companions defined his character.”
Jacobson further reflected: “Our conversations always concluded with his heartfelt declaration of love – emotions we wholeheartedly reciprocated. Though we’ll feel this loss acutely, we find comfort knowing his pain has ended.”
North first captured audiences’ hearts as the precocious Dennis Mitchell during the sitcom’s 1959-1963 run. His career expanded with film appearances in Zebra in the Kitchen and Maya, later transitioning to a TV adaptation of the latter production.
The performer diversified into voice work, contributing to animated series including Arabian Knights, The Pebbles and Bam-Bam Show, and Here Comes the Grump.
His final screen appearance occurred in 2003’s satirical comedy Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.
North previously shared how his iconic childhood role limited professional opportunities as an adult, stating he felt trapped by the “Dennis the Menace stereotype.”
Following his entertainment career, he pursued multiple vocations including military service, health food sector roles, and two decades as a Florida corrections officer.
He dedicated time to guiding young performers through A Minor Consideration, an organization established by fellow former child star Paul Petersen.
Petersen and spouse Rana honored North’s memory, writing: “A bright flame has been extinguished. Our first successful rescue mission bids farewell to earthly bonds. Rest well, dear comrade.”
Survivors include his spouse Cindy Hackney and three stepchildren.
