Jamie Foxx Celebrates with Gayle King After First Stand-Up Performance Since Health Scare: ‘We Landed on the Moon’

Jamie Foxx is marking a huge milestone nearly a year and a half after his medical emergency.

The actor wrapped the recording of his stand-up-comedy special for Netflix in Atlanta over the weekend, where he celebrated with his team and CBS Mornings‘ Gayle King.

In backstage video footage shared by the television journalist, Foxx, 56, first congratulated his team, saying they should “be so proud” and urging them to “give yourselves a round of applause” as he opened a bottle of champagne.

After King, 69, asked how he was feeling, the Academy Award winner replied, “It was an excruciating time, to be able to open those wounds every single day for three months,” because “the worry” about how the show will be received “is what gets you.”

“We got a great show in the room, but we don’t know what [the audience] may laugh or what they may not laugh at,” Foxx explained. “Usually, when you do a stand-up special, you go out for a year and you work every little nook and cranny, and then you tape it. You don’t just show up in Atlanta and turn the camera on.”

Also in her behind-the-scenes video, King told the actor she’d “never seen a show where we were laughing and crying at the same time.”

“It’s a personal journey, and I hope I never … I am never gonna go through this again. My next jokes will start out, ‘Knock-knock!’ ” he said, which drew laughter from those around him. “I’ll do an hour and a half of knock-knock jokes.”

The video ended with Foxx thanking his his team and adding, “We landed on the moon.”

“Let’s put it away. Let’s sit back and watch it, and then let’s build toward a newer, brighter and healthier future,” he said.

The stand-up special comes after Foxx suffered a “medical complication” in April 2023 while midway through production on Netflix film Back in Action, then spent months out of the public eye.

The Ray actor revealed details about his “unforgettable one-man show,” last month, sharing on Instagram that it would “[take] the stage to share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration.”

“I know prayer works and you could call @iamjamiefoxx Exhibit A!” King captioned a photo and video slideshow of the celebrations, following the taping of the special in Atlanta. “He’s finally talking about it on his own terms and in his own way.”

While details about a release date have not been released yet, King added, “Can’t wait for you to see this comedy special on Netflix … coming soon!”
