Haley Joel Osment is expressing remorse after using racial slurs against a police officer while being arrested earlier this month.
The 37-year-old actor was apprehended for alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance at a ski lodge in Mammoth Lakes, California, on April 8. On April 17, the Mono County District Attorney’s Office announced that he had been charged with possession of cocaine and disorderly conduct, with his arraignment scheduled for June 7.
Osment has since released an apology for the “disgraceful language” he used during the arrest.
“I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior. Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner,” Osment stated in an apology released on April 17. “The past few months of loss and displacement have broken me down to a very low emotional place.”
He further noted, “But that’s no excuse for using this disgusting word. From the bottom of my heart, I apologize to absolutely everyone that this hurts. What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage – I’ve let the Jewish community down, and it devastates me. I don’t ask for anyone’s forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”
Bodycam footage shared on April 17 shows Osment during his arrest, where he repeatedly claims, “I’m being attacked.”
When asked for his name, he responds, “I’m an American.” Police then searched him and found a $20 bill, which they noted contained a substance upon unfolding.
It remains unclear what was inside the $20 bill. A police source indicated that the “controlled substance” he was arrested for is presumed to be cocaine, which is currently being tested.
Witnesses reported that Osment had been drinking at a nearby bar, where employees stopped serving him after he spilled a drink. He then became “aggravated” and “argumentative” and attempted to get on a ski lift, which prompted staff to call the police.
In the footage from the police car, Osment is seen saying, “I’m being kidnapped by a f—— Nazi,” and later uses a racial, antisemitic slur directed at the arresting officer.
Osment has faced legal issues previously. In 2018, he was involved in a public altercation at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday. Earlier, in 2006, he was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving after a car accident and later pleaded no contest to DUI and possession of marijuana, resulting in three years of probation.
