From Campus Love to Hollywood Dreams: The Inspiring Journey of Sinners Director Ryan Coogler and His Wife Zinzi

Ryan mentioned that he has observed many filmmakers he admires collaborating with their partners.

“I recall a meeting with Zack Snyder, and his wife [Deborah Snyder] was present, managing his projects. Similarly, during my meeting with J.J. [Abrams], his wife [Katie McGrath] was also there overseeing everything,” Ryan shared. “In that moment, I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m approaching this all wrong.’ Then, in 2015, we met Chris [Nolan] and Emma [Thomas]. That’s when I began to seriously pitch Zinzi.”

This collaboration has proven to be fruitful, with Ryan indicating in a recent interview that he always runs his ideas by his partner first.

“I had to persuade her a bit, but that’s always part of the process,” Ryan explained about presenting Sinners to Zinzi. “She puts the pitch through its paces. I know I’ve got a solid idea when she says, ‘Okay, now you can discuss it with someone else.'”

Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan, is currently showing in theaters.
