Michael Strahan Is Still Workshopping His Grandpa Name — and Shares the NSFW Moniker That’s His Favorite

Michael Strahan is proud to be a first-time grandpa, but he still hasn’t landed on the perfect name.

In a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the former professional football player, 53, spoke with guest host Roy Wood Jr., 46, about becoming a grandpa for the first time. Strahan, whose daughter Tanita, 33, welcomed her 5-month-old son Onyx in September 2024, revealed that he’s still workshopping his nickname and shared his top options to date.

“He’s only 5 months, so I mean, I don’t know yet, [and] he doesn’t know yet, but I’m thinking about ‘Pimp Daddy,’ ” he told the comedian. “But I don’t think that’s gonna look too good when we go to the playground, so I’m thinking ‘Big Papa.'”

The Good Morning America anchor also admitted he still doesn’t feel old enough to be a grandfather. As a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, following the arrival of his daughter’s son, Strahan shared similar sentiments about feeling too young to enter that stage of his life.

“I went over after I finished up work at Fox yesterday, and I was holding him,” he explained, pretending to cradle Onyx in his arms. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to get you so spoiled and give you back to your parents.'”

He added, “It’s the most amazing feeling, but I don’t feel old enough.”

Strahan had his two older children, Tanita and Michael Jr., 31, with his first wife, Wanda Hutchins, before welcoming twins Isabella and Sophia, 20, with his second wife, Jean Muggli. The dad of four has proudly talked about how much he loves being a dad. In 2016, Strahan told PEOPLE how he makes his blended family work.

“My kids give me strength,” he said. “I love being with the kids. To me, it’s all about family, now more than anything.”

In 2017, Strahan received a Father of the Year Award from The National Father’s Day Committee.

“I love being a father,” he told PEOPLE of the honor. “It’s absolutely the most joy you’re going to have in your life. It’s also the most stress you’re going to have.”
