Dwayne Johnson Says Chris Evans Made Him Laugh ‘So Many Times’ Filming Red One: We Had ‘Good Chemistry’ (Exclusive)
Chris Evans’ comedy chops had Dwayne Johnson in stitches on the set of Red One.
Johnson, 52, chatted with PEOPLE on Sunday, Nov. 3, during the world premiere of the duo’s Christmas action-comedy in Berlin, and revealed how he and Evans, 43, played off each other on set.
Asked how he kept a straight face during some of the funnier scenes, considering his character is more serious, Johnson joked with a laugh, ” ‘Cause I’m a pro,” before admitting, “No, so many times I laughed. I am notorious for ruining takes. I laugh; it’s just what happens.”
But to Evans’ credit, “Chris is a very funny guy. He’s also very talented,” Johnson continued.
“And I thought earlier that maybe me and Chris might have some good chemistry. So did he. [And] we did,” he added.
Red One is based on an original story from Hiram Garcia, the president of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, with Jake Kasdan, who previously helmed Johnson’s films Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, as the director and co-producer.
The film follows an E.L.F. Task Force Commander partnering with a bounty hunter to save Christmas. Johnson stars as Callum Drift, opposite Evans as Jack O’Malley.
“After Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons) — Code Name: RED ONE — is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” reads an official synopsis.
Alongside Johnson, Evans and Simmons, 69, Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Nick Kroll and Kiernan Shipka round out the cast of the upcoming film.
While speaking to PEOPLE in Berlin on Sunday, Johnson said that he was drawn to Red One because he felt “the material was good” and “loved” the script, which was written by Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Shazam! Fury of the Gods).
And admittedly, the wrestler-turned-actor also “wanted to make a Christmas movie” — but not just any Christmas movie.
“I think when you get into acting … the idea of making a Christmas movie … you wanna make sure that you make a good one,” he said. “You don’t want to be part of a crew that makes a s—– Christmas movie. So I think we made a good one.”
Red One is in theaters Nov. 15.
