Denzel Washington Redefines Stardom: “I’m No Hollywood Actor—What Does That Even Mean?”

Elsewhere during his discussion with Sunday Morning, Washington expressed how the Broadway performance represents a fantasy for him — and his aspiration to honor the legacy of the late Jones, one of his idols.
“James Earl Jones was my guiding light during my college years,” he remarked. “He embodied what I aspired to be. I missed witnessing his Othello, but I’m certain it couldn’t compare to my 22-year-old portrayal. But, you know, it’s my opportunity now.”
“I possess much less knowledge now,” Washington went on, contemplating his younger self’s portrayal of the central military officer character. “I believed I had everything figured out back then. I wasn’t particularly fond of the role because I lacked the wisdom to grasp it. Now I realize it’s fundamentally about the connection, you know, that these characters share. He loves not wisely, but far too much.”
Collaborating with Gyllenhaal along with staging a Shakespearean production of this magnitude, he added, is “the most thrilled I’ve been this century.”
“Honestly,” he stated. “I’ve never been this enthusiastic about anything I’ve engaged in as I am about this.”
Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon leads the production, which is scheduled for a strictly limited 15-week run. The chief producer Brian Anthony Moreland brought the production to the forefront, alongside a variety of co-producers including Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kandi Burrus and her spouse Todd Tucker.
Othello is being performed at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre, now through Sunday, June 8.
