While Steve Rogers’ patriotic alter-ego famously boasts a celebrated posterior, one devoted enthusiast now sports a limb worthy of national pride.
In an unexpected twist last month, the 43-year-old performer appeared at a Manhattan tattoo studio where enthusiast Scott Clayton was putting finishing touches on an eighteen-month artistic project honoring the Marvel icon.
According to East Side Ink co-owner Josh Lord, Clayton began collaborating with artist Luke Atay in autumn 2023 to craft a biomechanical arm design mirroring the Winter Soldier’s prosthetic, enhanced with Captain America’s iconic shield and simulated combat damage.
“He specifically requested laser-blast textures appearing to tear through the metallic surface,” Lord elaborates, emphasizing the design’s complexity.
During his final session, Clayton received the shock of his life when Evans materialized to witness the completed masterpiece. “Watching realization dawn as he recognized the living embodiment of his hero remains my career highlight,” the tattoo artist reflects.
Lord’s connection with Evans traces back to 2018 when the original Avengers squad commemorated their superhero tenure with matching ink. “Chris stands out as one of the most genuine people I’ve worked with,” the artist shares, having personally inked the star multiple times.
In a role reversal, the Marvel ensemble once collaborated on body art for Lord himself. “While all performed admirably, Evans demonstrated particularly steady hands during the process,” he recalls with amusement.
Describing Clayton as an ideal client, Lord praises his stoic demeanor and encyclopedic Marvel knowledge. “He owns three authentic shields and embodies the superhero aesthetic perfectly,” the tattoo veteran notes, while commending Atay’s technical mastery.
“Luke’s versatility elevates our entire studio,” Lord asserts. “His Hawaiian roots and collaborative spirit create positive energy whenever he’s working.”
Reflecting on Evans’ decade-long MCU journey, Lord shares details of the emotional tattoo reveal: “Scott stood speechless until Chris initiated conversation and posed for commemorative photos – true gentleman behavior.”
The seasoned artist, boasting New York tattooing experience since the last millennium, describes the event as “a perfect studio day,” while hinting at untold backstage stories. “The juiciest tales always stay behind closed doors,” he concludes with a wink.
