Chappell Roan Teases She’ll ‘Say Something Controversial’ If She Wins Any Awards at 2025 Grammys: ‘Why Not?’
Chappell Roan might improvise a Grammy Award acceptance speech.
During A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, the Apple TV+ and Apple Music hour-long holiday special that premiered on Monday, Dec. 16, the “Hot To Go” singer joined Zane Lowe in the front seat to belt out “Pink Pony Club” and drive around rural Missouri.
Roan, 26, spoke about her recognition from the Recording Academy while stopping at the local Gillioz Theatre with Lowe, 51. She called the Grammys a “double-edged sword,” likening it to a “talent show for the popular kids.”
However, the singer is excited about the recognition she received as a “gay artist.” “How amazing is it that a gay artist wrote a gay song that went No. 1 with a gay writer who did not grow up in the industry, did not have an in, has been busting her ass for a decade?” she told Lowe.
Added Roan, “It’s an honor to be nominated with some of the other artists.”
When Lowe asked if she had a speech written, she responded: “I don’t have a speech yet, but you know me. I’m going to say something controversial. Why not?”
Roan is nominated for six Grammy Awards this year, including record of the year for “Good Luck, Babe!,” album of the year for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and best new artist.
She celebrated her six nods with an Instagram post featuring a golden “six” balloon and Polaroid pictures on Nov. 22.
Kara and Dwight Amstutz, Roan’s parents, also joined her on her Carpool Karaoke segment to talk about the impact of the song “Pink Pony Club.” Kara said she was emotional when she first heard the song and found herself tearing up during the car ride.
“That song… I love singing it with her at her shows, I love it when you can just see the people respond to that song so much,” Kara said.
She added: “Even when we’re growing up, we really care about what our parents think of us… I hope that’s something that she always knows, that we love her so much and we could never not be proud of her.”
Elsewhere during the festive Carpool Karaoke special, Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa joined Lowe in the front seat to belt out some songs while driving around Los Angeles and Tokyo.
A Carpool Karaoke Christmas is now streaming on Apple TV+ and Apple Music.
