Ariana Grande Turned Mom Joan’s ‘Insane’ Game Night Comment About ‘Tiny D— Syndrome’ Into Saturday Night Live Sketch

Ariana Grande is turning her personal experiences into comedy gold!

On a recent episode of the Las Culturistas podcast, the Wicked star, 31, gave fans some insight into how her viral “Charades with Mom” sketch on Saturday Night Live came to be.

During Labor Day weekend, Grande recalled having her family over for game night when her brother-in-law Hale’s brother got a little too competitive.

“We’re playing charades and Hale’s brother, my brother-in-law’s brother… was like, ‘Haha, we’re winning’ vibes,” she told co-hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “That was the extent of it was he was like, ‘Woo-hoo! We’re ahead,’ and my mom goes, ‘Tiny-d— syndrome, huh?’”

Shocked by her mother’s remark, she exclaimed, “Mommy, wait. That’s not funny. I was like, ‘Mom, that’s intense and harmful. That’s so intense!’”

“We all were laughing, and, of course, [Hale’s brother] laughed,” Grande laughed. “But she was like, ‘Well, that’s a sign of what that is.’ And I was like, ‘Mommy! This is insane!’ And then I started doing it as a bit for Jesse, Hale’s other brother, and he was crying tears and it lasted the whole day. So I was like, ‘Bowen, we have to do something with this, please. It’s just so silly.'”

The “Eternal Sunshine” singer admitted that she’s a part of an “aggressive game-playing family.” While winning may matter to some of her other loved ones, Grande said she doesn’t “care” about any outcomes.

“I just wanna have fun and I wanna be there and I’m here for a good time,” she explained, but added of her brother: “Frankie can’t lose a game. Mommy can’t lose a game. They can’t lose a game. They don’t like it.” 

The sketch in question featured Yang as the boyfriend of Grande’s character’s son, played by Michael Longfellow. After Yang innocently teases Grande in charades, things end up going a little too far when game night turns physical. When Yang fights back, Grande welcomes him with open arms and the two even engage in a passionate kiss.

Elsewhere in the podcast, Yang took the time to express some regrets over a moment in that skit.

“I really have to apologize to you in person. I opened up my mouth too much when we kissed on SNL,” said Yang to which Grande replied, “You absolutely did. I was shaking after.”

“Not in a bad way! Just in a disarming way,” she added, laughing.

“We were dropped in,” Grande told Yang on his podcast. “It felt like what these people needed at that time. It felt like what these characters required. And I’m all for it.”
