Ariana Grande Ditches Glinda’s Go-To Pink at U.K. Wicked Premiere for Another One of Her Character’s Signature Looks
Something has changed within Ariana Grande.
At the London premiere of Wicked on Monday, Nov. 19, the actress and singer decided to ditch her usual Glinda-inspired pink hues in favor of a butter yellow ensemble.
Grande, 31, walked the green carpet in a custom silk evening gown and matching wrap by Ralph Lauren Collection. She accessorized with a sparkling choker necklace as well as a pair of sunglasses — which some Wicked fans on X smartly pointed out is a likely nod to a scene in the Broadway musical in which the character of Glinda (originally played by Kristin Chenoweth) wears a similar pair of eyewear with a yellow dress.
Grande’s costar Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the movie adaptation, wore a black Schiaparelli couture dress just like her character.
The duo posed for photos at the premiere, holding hands as they showed off their Wicked-inspired looks.
Erivo, 37, brought the drama with her black Schiaparelli gown, which featured a glittering conical lining underneath its voluminous tulle skirt.
Grande and Erivo, 37, have committed to method dressing throughout the Wicked press tour.
For the New York premiere on Nov. 14, Grande leaned into her character in a pink strapless Louis Vuitton dress with a peplum silhouette. Erivo opted for a custom Dior look with an exaggerated waistline and sweetheart neckline.
In Mexico on Nov. 11, the duo wowed yet again in character-inspired looks. Grande wore an iridescent Versace dress had a deep V neckline and a structured bodice in a shimmery pale pink-white color. Erivo went for a black dress yet again, but this time with an unexpected twist. The Thom Browne outfit featured long sleeves and theatrical hands at the shoulders as well as a hooded top.
In an interview with content creator @aichark released on Nov. 7, Grande and Erivo shared that their coordinating outfit streak started on “day one” of Wicked.
“Our first day of rehearsal we both wear Balenciaga hoodies. Mine was pink and said ‘gay’ and hers was black and said ‘Balenciaga’,” Grande revealed.
“It’s never really ever planned. It’s never planned. We just turn up and that’s what happens,” Erivo added.
