Andrew Garfield Says His Sex Scene with Florence Pugh Went ‘A Little Bit Further Than We Were Meant To’
So when it came time to do the first take of a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” — filmed on a closed set with just the leads, a camera operator and boom operator — the actors got a bit carried away, Garfield recalled.
“The scene becomes passionate — as we choreographed it — and we get into it, as it were,” the actor recalled. “And we go a little bit further than we were meant to just because we don’t hear ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe, and we’re kind of like, ‘Okay let’s go to the next thing and the next thing and we’ll let this progress.’ ”
The stars let things progress so long, he said, that by the time they looked up from each other, the camera was no longer on them.
At a certain point, he recalled, he and Pugh were “both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.’ ”
“I think I look up,” Garfield continued, getting up out of his seat to demonstrate. “I look up, and in the corner is [the cameraman] and our boom operator. [He] has the camera by his side, and is turned into the wall.”
In We Live in Time, Garfield and Pugh portray couple Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh) — who have a unique meet-cute after Almut accidentally hits Tobias with her car — as their romance blossoms and relationship changes over the years.
The couple is “brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives,” per an official synopsis for the movie. “As they embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken, in filmmaker John Crowley’s decade-spanning, deeply moving romance.”
We Live in Time is in limited theaters starting Friday, Oct. 11.
