Always Be Celebrating: Star Power Ignites Glengarry Glen Ross Broadway Premiere
Starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk, and Bill Burr, the latest restaging of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-honored play Glengarry Glen Ross formally debuted at New York City’s The Palace Theatre, concluding its Broadway previews on Monday, March 31.
This staging, guided by Tony Award recipient Patrick Marber, is undertaking a restricted engagement that concludes on June 14. The cast also features Michael McKean, Donald Webber, Jr., Howard W. Overshown, and John Pirruccello.
To commemorate the premiere, several of Hollywood’s most prominent figures attended, striking poses on the red carpet and later joining the show’s official celebratory gathering.
Among the notable guests present were Sarah Snook, Zosia Mamet, Tony Goldwyn, Katie Holmes, Ansel Elgort, Cynthia Nixon, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Taylor Neisen, Liev Schreiber, Molly Ringwald, and Jason Biggs.
Glengarry Glen Ross is set across two days within “a ruthless Chicago real estate office, where four agents vie to sell largely valueless properties to unsuspecting clients,” as stated in an official summary. The stakes are considerable: the top seller secures a car, whereas the lowest performer faces termination.
The drama initially opened at London’s National Theatre prior to its Broadway premiere in March 1984. It has been brought back to Broadway twice previously, in 2005 and 2013. Both stagings boasted celebrated ensembles, including performers such as Schreiber, Jeffrey Tambor, Bobby Cannavale, and David Harbour.
For Burr, Odenkirk, and Pirruccello, this revival marks their first appearance on Broadway. Culkin, who received the Best Supporting Actor Oscar earlier this year, comes back to the Main Stem following his role opposite Michael Cera in a 2014 staging of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth.
