David Duchovny brings real-world mysteries to light through his latest project Secrets Declassified with David Duchovny.
Premiering April 4 on History Channel, the 10-episode series examines newly accessible information about astonishing covert operations previously hidden by authorities.
“The truth often outdoes fictional strangeness,” Duchovny, 64, reveals exclusively to PEOPLE. “Government archives contain countless hidden actions worth exploring.”
“Secrecy itself isn’t inherently wrong,” he clarifies. “Necessary protections exist, but some methods employed—from bizarre to terrifying—deserve scrutiny.”
The debut episode investigates Nevada’s Area 51 military base, site of enduring rumors about extraterrestrial technology and alleged alien remains stored at the facility.
“Conspiracy theories dominate cultural conversations,” observes Duchovny. “Though associated with X-Files lore, I find grand cover-ups unlikely. If two people struggle to keep secrets, how could entire organizations succeed?”
The Emmy nominee adds: “Conspiracy beliefs simplify complex realities.” He humorously recalls encountering fans passionately debating hidden truths: “At a convention years ago, people asked my views on ‘lizard people’—a theory I’d never heard until then!”
