Tragic News: Investigation Continues into the Untimely Passing of Brett Gardner’s Son, Cause of Death Confirmed Not to be Asphyxiation

Asphyxiation has been excluded as the reason for the demise of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old offspring of New York Yankees player Brett Gardner and his wife Jessica Gardner, Costa Rican authorities affirmed to PEOPLE.
Despite earlier reports indicating that the adolescent son of the 41-year-old New York Yankees player had died from asphyxiation “following potential intoxication supposedly caused by consuming some food,” officials are now asserting that this is inaccurate.
Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, an official from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, stated that after an appointment with a doctor from the Forensic Pathology Section of the agency, the previous ruling of death by asphyxiation in Miller’s situation has been dismissed.
“The initial conclusion ruled out asphyxiation as the cause of death. No significant irregularities were discerned in the respiratory tract upon examination of the body,” Garcia remarked.
Samples have been dispatched to histology, toxicology, and neuropathology laboratories for additional analysis, with results anticipated in two to three months. The case continues to be addressed as a death that is under investigation.
The teenage son of the MLB player passed away during a family trip to Costa Rica on Friday, March 21.
Earlier this week, on Monday, March 24, Garcia informed NBC that Miller’s cause of death was asphyxiation “following potential intoxication supposedly caused by consuming some food,” according to NBC News.
Garcia indicated that results from Miller’s toxicology test and official autopsy may take two to three months.
On Sunday, March 23, the MLB organization announced Miller’s passing in a statement via X on behalf of his mother and father.
“With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after becoming ill along with several other family members during vacation. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” the post articulated.
His parents fondly remembered Miller as “a cherished son and brother,” recognized for “his infectious smile.”
“We are incredibly grateful to all who have reached out to provide support and encouragement during this challenging time, and we are confident that our faith, family, and friends will assist us in navigating this unimaginable loss. Our prayers extend to Miller’s teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share in their sorrow,” the family continued, requesting privacy as they mourn.
Included in the post were two images — one of Miller alone beaming in camo attire and another which featured a family portrait.
In addition to Miller, Brett and Jessica are also parents to another son, Hunter Gardner.
After Brett’s 2021 season with the Yankees, the professional athlete told media that he ultimately wished to dedicate more of his time to his family.
“This game has been wonderful to me and my family,” he expressed, according to Post and Courier. “However, the longer you play and the older your children become, the tougher it gets, and the more occasions I miss — not being able to observe them back home doing their thing.”
