Britney Spears Declared Legally Single on 43rd Birthday, Seven Months After Finalizing Divorce from Sam Asghari
Britney Spears is celebrating her 43rd birthday — and receiving a gift of sorts from the California courts.
The pop star was declared legally single on Monday, Dec. 2, seven months after her divorce from ex-husband Sam Asghari was finalized in Los Angeles on May 2, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
Spears and Asghari, 30, separated in late July 2023, just 13 months after their star-studded wedding. He filed for divorce in August 2023, citing irreconcilable differences.
“The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged,” a source told PEOPLE of the split in May. “Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on.”
Spears showed off that newfound freedom in October, when she posted a video to Instagram of herself in a wedding dress, telling fans she’d “married myself.”
“The day I married myself … Bringing it back because it might seem embarrassing or stupid, but I think it’s the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done !!!” the “Toxic” singer captioned her post.
The Grammy winner also recently spent time with her youngest son Jayden, 18, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline. The former couple, who split in 2006, are also parents to son Sean Preston, 19.
A source told PEOPLE last month that Spears reunited with Jayden in Los Angeles, where they hung out at her home.
“Spending time together has made her happy,” the insider said.
Asghari, meanwhile, told PEOPLE in November that he’s “absolutely” been able to move on with his life post-divorce, and that he’s been focused on work. The actor and fitness trainer is set to appear on season 3 of the popular Peacock series The Traitors, which will premiere next month.
“It’s the bed that you make yourself, and you got to learn how to lay in it, so it’s part of the lifestyle,” he said. “You just got to keep it positive. You got to stay grounded and understand what the truth is and really just live with that rather than other people’s opinions or anything like that.
Asghari also spoke to PEOPLE in March about his split from Spears, revealing that he holds no ill will toward his ex.
“It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time, and people grow apart and people move on,” he said. “I’ve always hated people leaving a certain relationship — and at some point they told each other they love each other and they sat at the same table and ate food [together] — so I never understood when people part ways [and] they talk badly about each other. That’s something I’m never going to do because I had nothing but an amazing experience and a great life, and that’s always going to be part of my life, a chapter of my life.”
