Fortune Feimster Jokes About Her Mom Getting ‘Jealous’ During Early Days of Romance with Wife Jax (Exclusive)
Fortune Feimster is getting real about an unexpected side effect of being loud about loving her wife Jacquelyn “Jax” Smith.
In PEOPLE’s exclusive first look at her upcoming Netflix special, Fortune Feimster: Crushing It, the comedian, 44, hilariously recalls how her mother began feeling left out after she and Smith first began dating.
“Something happened when I met Jax that I did not expect. My mom got a little jealous,” she begins as the audience bursts into laughter. “I remember if I would buy Jax something like a scarf, my mom would be like, ‘I like scarves.’ I’m like, ‘You’re not my girlfriend.'”
To make matters worse, the comedian reveals that her mother’s birthday is just five days after her wife’s. In the month of February, she jokes that she often gets “heart palpitations” over the sheer stress and anxiety.
“I remember, early on in my relationship, it was very popular to go on Facebook and profess your love for whoever you were with. So Jax’s birthday, I go on Facebook [and] I’m like, ‘I love you so much. You’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,'” she recalls as she pretends to barf while typing on a keyboard.
After posting a touching tribute consisting of “30 pictures” and a “collage that took five hours to put together,” Feimster recalls how she called her mother on her birthday five days later.
When she received a tepid response, Feimster asked what she was up to on her big day.
“I’m on Facebook,” she recalls her mom quipping. “I was looking at my messages, and I don’t see one from you, and I know your thumbs work because you used them five days ago.”
“I sent you an edible arrangement. What is this?” Feimster laughs before joking, “She was pissed, so I had to unfriend her!”
Crushing It is Feimster’s third Netflix special, following Good Fortune (2022) and Sweet & Salty (2020). In the new special, which is directed by Kristian Mercado Figueroa, the comedian discusses how she navigates “relationships, personal growth, and the hilarities of everyday life,” by sharing personal stories.
“With her unique comedic perspective and infectious energy, Fortune invites audiences into her world where laughter and love reign supreme,” reads a synopsis.
After meeting in 2015, Feimster and Smith got engaged in 2018 and tied the knot in 2020. The two share their relationship on social media and have also talked about working together. (Smith has served as an executive producer for Feimster’s comedy specials.)
Mostly, though, they post about spending time together and with their Pomeranian, Biggie.
“I want people to know me and Jax are like everybody else,” she told PEOPLE of their relationship while chatting about her 2022 Good Fortune special. “We happen to be gay but our story is not much different from other people’s. I want the special to be something everyone can relate to. You don’t have to be gay to relate to an engagement story.”
The Mindy Project star added, “I get a lot of men coming up to me after shows being like, ‘Oh my God, the proposal was the most nerve-racking thing.’ It’s neat to be able to relate to them on that.”
Fortune Feimster: Crushing It premieres Dec. 3 on Netflix.
