Mrs. Doubtfire Home Owner Recalls Massive Tribute ‘Almost 2 Feet Deep’ After Robin Williams’ Death
The owners of the Mrs. Doubtfire house were overwhelmed by the visitors that arrived after Robin Williams’ death.
Former owners Douglas and Oliver appear in The House From…, a documentary film by Tommy Avallones and narrated by Jason Lee, looking at famous homes from television and film.
Mrs. Doubtfire tells the story of Daniel Hillard (Williams), a dad of three who is struggling in his marriage to Miranda (Sally Field). When Miranda asks for a divorce, Daniel ultimately becomes “Mrs. Doubtfire,” disguising himself as a nanny and housekeeper whom Miranda hires to watch the kids, played by Lisa Jakub, Mara Wilson and Matthew Lawrence.
The house became a beacon for distraught fans when Williams died in 2014 at age 63.
“I was driving down from our house in Hillsburg, going to the office. And around five o’clock, I got a call from one of the neighbors saying, ‘You better come home.'”
In the documentary, news footage shows the makeshift memorial that developed at the home. Crowds gathered, leaving flowers and photos at the home as they remembered the actor in one of his most endearing roles.
“There were a lot of flowers,” Oliver recalled.
“They were almost two feet deep from the corner to the walkway on the right side of the house… It was fine for a few days but after 4, 5, 6 days it started to smell. So we had to get it out of there.”
They weren’t alone in the clean-up, however. “Actually, who helped me clean it were people who came to visit and see the house,” he pointed out.
The tree in front of the home also sported handwritten messages and carvings with memorial messages for the late actor, some of which remain there to this day.
“The big thing is that this is a place for people to pay respect to Robin Williams, and I don’t know how the house became that, but I’m glad it did,” Douglas notes.
The Mrs. Doubtfire house and so many other houses in television and film history appear in The House From…, which premieres on Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort Channel on Fubo, on Sunday, Oct. 27. The documentary will be available for purchase on TVOD platforms starting Monday, Oct. 28.
