Ke Huy Quan Presses Josh Brolin to Name His Favorite Goonies Costar in Surprise Reunion Moment 

Ke Huy Quan made a surprise virtual appearance to ask his Goonies castmate Josh Brolin a very important question about the iconic ’80s kids’ film — and brought a special guest along with him.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, as Brolin, 56, was preparing to answer some questions from the audience about his storied acting career at New York Comic Con — held at the Javits Center and moderated by Steve Weintraub — the No Country for Old Men star received a video sent by one of his former costars, Quan, 53.

The Everything Everywhere All at Once star had two questions for Brolin, which played over the screen behind him, including: “What was your favorite memory from making The Goonies?”

“The second part,” Quan continued to laughs from the crowd, “Who is your favorite Goonie?”

Adding to the surprise even more, Quan turned the camera and another of their Goonies castmates, Jeff Cohen, came into view.

“You know what’s actually a great question,” Cohen said to cheers from the crowd. “Who is your favorite Goonie?”

“No one cares about your favorite memory by the way, but who is your favorite Goonie? We’d all like to know,” Cohen added, as he and Quan jokingly gestured toward themselves.

Responding to his former costars’ questions, Brolin told the panel attendees that one of his favorite memories of the filming of The Goonies — in which Brolin played Brand, the oldest member of the crew — involved the iconic pirate ship “Inferno” that was built to scale for the production.

“I wrote a book that comes out in November, and it’s in the book,” Brolin began, referring to his forthcoming memoir From Under The Truck. “They wouldn’t let us see the ship the whole time they were building it. So we finally ended up on the Warner Brothers lot, and we were shooting in different stages, but they wouldn’t let us see the ship.”

“Finally the moment came, I think, four months into filming, four-and-a-half months into filming, and they lined us up, they backed us in, they had us close our eyes,” he recounted. “They said, ‘We want you to go underwater.’ They had speakers underwater. They had all the cameras set up. And they said, ‘We want you guys, because we’re coming off the slide, that’s the cut, and we want you to come up from under the water and turn around,’ and they’re going to get the real reaction of, you know, all of our real reaction of the ship.”

Although Brolin’s genuine reaction to the massive scale of the boat was captured on camera, the first words out of his mouth weren’t exactly PG rating-approved, much to the chagrin of director Dick Donner’s chagrin.

“The ship was spectacular, ultimately. So we were backed into it. We had our eyes closed. We went underwater. I hear this muffled, kind of, ‘Okay, guys. Ready and … action,’ ” he recalled. “And we went up, and we turned around, and I said, ‘F—!’ ”

“Dick Donner went, ‘What?’ ‘I’m sorry! Holy s—, man, look at that thing,’ ” he recalled, to laughs from the crowd.

Ultimately, Brolin and the rest of the crew had to act out their next round of reactions to the “Inferno.”

And returning to Quan’s other question, the actor joked that his former costars are “all my favorites” — but gave a shout-out to Quan, as he “came back and won an Academy Award, man.”

Although Cohen stepped back from acting as he became an adult and went on to become a lawyer, he’s been open about remaining close with certain members of the Goonies cast — particularly Quan, whom he represented during contract negotiations for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

“When the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal, he said he never imagined that he’d have to talk to Chunk and Data for his movie,” Quan joked during an interview with other actors for The Hollywood Reporter last year, referring to their characters in the 1985 adventure comedy.

“Chunk get you a good deal, by the way?” fellow interviewee Adam Sandler quipped.

“Jeff is an outstanding lawyer,” said Quan.

Quan has also been open about his own love for The Goonies, telling Dax Shepard on an episode of his Armchair Expert podcast earlier this year that appearing in the movie alongside a cast of other kids was “incredible.”

“One day, we’re walking on the pirate ship, the next day, we’re going down a water slide.” he told Shepard and co-host Monica Padman. ”I mean, it was like a kid’s dream.”
