Bruce Springsteen Says Wife Patti Scialfa Is ‘Doing Good’ amid ‘Tough’ Rare Blood Cancer Diagnosis

Bruce Springsteen is sharing a positive health update on his wife, Patti Scialfa.

The trailer for Bruce Springsteen: Backstage and Backstreets, an upcoming ABC News special, was released on Oct. 15, and the “Born in the U.S.A.” rocker opened up about how Scialfa is feeling after she revealed her multiple myeloma diagnosis last month.

Scialfa’s health came up as Springsteen, 75, and ABC News host George Stephanopoulos visited The Stone Pony concert venue in Asbury Park, New Jersey — a.k.a. the married couple’s initial meeting location, where they “just struck up a friendship” after speaking by the “back bar.”

“She’s doing good,” said Springsteen of Scialfa, 71, who revealed she was diagnosed with the blood cancer six years ago in her husband’s recent Road Diary documentary. “We caught it early, which was important.”

“It’s a tough disease. It’s very fatiguing,” added the “Born to Run” musician, before explaining why the pair waited to publicly reveal Scialfa’s diagnosis: “She hadn’t played in the band in a long time, and people I don’t think knew why. ‘Where’s Patti?’”

Presented by ABC News Studios and George Stephanopoulos Productions, Bruce Springsteen: Backstage and Backstreets will also feature backstage access to The Boss at concerts, personal interviews and reflections on his life pre-fame.

The film follows Springsteen and the band as they prepare to embark on their first tour since 2017, which is set to continue through July 2025 — and saw Scialfa return to the stage as a band member for select performances.

“I’ve been performing with this band for 40 years. With those first performances, it felt so good to be back onstage. Touring has become a challenge for me,” she said in the doc. “In 2018, well, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma.”

The illness has led Scialfa to live with caution, but it hasn’t lessened her love for performing. “This affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she said in the film.

“Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs onstage, and that’s been a treat,” added Scialfa. “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”
