Madonna Praises ‘Unbelievable’ Emilia Pérez Cast After Attending New York Film Festival Premiere: ‘Masterpiece!’
Madonna is a big fan of Emilia Pérez.
On Tuesday, Oct. 1, the music icon, 66, attended a special screening of the movie at New York Film Festival, where the filmmaking team received another standing ovation.
At the event, Madonna was pictured hugging director Jacques Audiard, as well as posing with cast members Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and Édgar Ramírez, as well as choreographer Damien Jalet.
Madonna had nothing but praise for the musical on her Instagram Stories following the screening, sharing a poster for the film and writing, “Masterpiece!” on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
She then shared the snap of herself and director Audiard, writing, “GENIUS!!” above it, as well as posting the photo of herself with the cast.
“Unbelievable performances!!” Madonna praised, adding multiple pink and blue heart emojis.
“Wow,” she then scribbled in pink lettering over another movie poster.
Emilia Pérez tells the story of “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations,” per an official synopsis.
“Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness,” it continues.
“The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Gascón) enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self,” the synopsis adds.
Madonna’s praise comes after the Spanish-language musical’s New York Film Festival premiere on Monday, Sept. 30.
While talking to PEOPLE at the event, Saldaña spoke highly of her fellow cast members, insisting they formed a tight bond while working on the film.
“It’s wonderful,” she said of their friendship. “To this day, there’s so much love, there’s so much respect. We’re rooting for each other. We’re happy for each other. We’re fixing each other’s makeup and wardrobes.”
“You know, every time on the red carpet, we were so excited to be a part of this project to be working with [director] Jacques Audiard that we were kind of childlike when we were shooting Emilia,” she continued.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in May and won two awards, including the best actress honor for its ensemble of women.
It then screened at Toronto International Film Festival last month, where Gomez told PEOPLE she felt “grateful” for all the “overwhelming” things happening in her professional life.
“It’s such a wonderful gift,” Gomez said of her career highs.
Emilia Pérez is in select theaters Nov. 1 before it begins streaming on Netflix Nov. 13.
