Earlier this month, documentary filmmaker Stephen Soucy spoke with PEOPLE about his new film, Merchant Ivory — which shares the story of American film maker James Ivory and his late producing and life partner Ismail Merchant’s work through Merchant Ivory Productions. During her interview in the film, Redgrave chides Soucy after he asked her about her reportedly tumultuous time making 1984’s The Bostonians. “Darling, films are not family effects. Please don’t let’s go down that road. Come on,” she told the director.

As Soucy later shared with PEOPLE, his “name is in a long list of people that have been scolded by Vanessa Redgrave. Jim included and Ismail included.” While he felt Redgrave didn’t “care” for the director’s questions, he said he still managed to get “great footage from her and we turned it around.” Other stars who spoke on-camera for the project included Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves.

“Stephen, I really enjoyed that,” he remembered Redgrave telling him after their conversation. “I really enjoyed talking about Merchant Ivory. Those years were so important to me.”
