Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s 2 Kids: All About Daughter Poppy and Son Oskar
Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are a designer duo that take the interior design world by storm — as well as fatherhood!
The couple, who married in May 2014, share two children: daughter Poppy and son Oskar. For Brent, he knew that he wanted to start a family with his future-husband as soon as he met him.
While Brent initially thought he would never have children “because I’d not seen a lot of people like us and families like ours with children,” he says everything changed after meeting Berkus.
“Within 10 minutes, I wanted to create a life and a family with him,” he told PEOPLE in 2022. “And it was the first time that I really believed that we could and I could. He was the first person that made me feel safe enough to go, ‘Okay, we can do this together.’ ”
They welcomed both kids via surrogates, and the dads are proud of their “beautiful” journey to fatherhood.
Speaking to USA Today, Berkus shared that the couple had formed “lovely relationships” with both of their kids’ surrogates and would be “thanking them forever” for “completing our family.”
He added, “We see it as a very beautiful experience.”
Here’s everything to know about Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent’s kids.
Poppy Brent-Berkus, 8
Berkus and Brent welcomed their first child Poppy via surrogate on March 23, 2015.
“Jeremiah and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of our daughter, Poppy Brent-Berkus, born via surrogate on March 23, 2015,” Berkus wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “We are so excited to finally be a family of 3! As anyone with a newborn knows, we have our work cut out for us but couldn’t be happier to be embarking on this life changing journey that is parenthood.”
Poppy has lived in both Los Angeles and New York City, and she developed an adorable in-flight habit from a young age.
“Poppy likes to see who else is traveling, say hello to people [on the plane]. She’s very social,” Berkus told PEOPLE in 2018.
Adding that she is “super easy” to travel with, the designer said, “All you need is like 20 episodes of Peppa Pig downloaded, and you’re good to go. She’s traveled a lot with us; not crazy around the world, but she’s been to Mexico a couple of times. She loves traveling.”
Speaking of their decision to buy back their former Greenwich Village penthouse, it was something that felt right for the family.
“I think as a family, leaving California and bringing the kids back to the West Village in New York City was a huge decision,” Berkus said during a promotional clip for season 2 of HGTV’s The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project. “Basically, everything in our lives is within a five block radius — the children’s schools, our home, our design offices.”
In February 2023, Poppy’s creativity was sparked by a visit to New York Fashion Week. The youngster attended the Christian Siriano show with Brent, and she let her designer genes take center stage.
“Poppy’s first fashion week began with @csiriano’s incredible collection — she hasn’t stopped sketching dress ideas since. Xx,” Brent captioned a post on Instagram Sunday. The pair posed in a black and white photo at the event, with Brent standing behind Poppy with a hand on her shoulder.
Oskar Michael Brent-Berkus, 6
The designers’ son, Oskar Michael, was born via surrogate on March 26, 2018, in Los Angeles.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Berkus and Brent revealed the heartfelt meaning behind their son’s name. Oskar was named after Berkus’ former partner, Fernando Bengoechea, who died tragically in the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka.
“His middle name was Oskar,” Berkus told PEOPLE shortly after his birth — adding that the tribute “was actually Jeremiah’s idea.”
“We have always honored Fernando’s memory in our relationship. He’s a part of our love story,” explained Brent. “It’s such an important chapter in Nate’s life. So the idea that we can honor his memory in a beautiful way was exciting to us.”
According to the couple, Poppy was really excited to welcome a sibling, and she stepped into her role of big sister with ease.
“We always thought she’d be sweet, but we never thought she’d be so kind and nurturing,” Brent told All the Moms shortly after Oskar’s birth in 2018. “It’s pretty adorable.”
He added that Poppy and Oskar cuddle in their dads’ beds every morning, and that Oskar was already familiar with his sister’s voice.
The two kids have very different personalities, and their dads can’t get enough of them.
“They’re very different, but they’re both the sweetest people we’ve ever met,” Brent once told PEOPLE. “We laugh, Nate and I, all the time. I’m like, ‘What would it be like to grow up with two parents who tell you they love you 37 times a day?’ ”
“The truth is, Poppy’s a born nurturer. She’s done this a million times. She’s an old soul,” he continued. “And Oskar is just like a walking sugar bear, the cuddler. He’s really empathetic and sweet, very sensitive. He’s got enough … He’s a little mischievous, which is fine.”
“But they’re just great,” the proud dad added. “We got so lucky that these great kids chose us.”
